la physicale #3 - brooklyn taco co.

two mondays ago i was on a boat...bitch. for the third year in a row, i bought a ticket for the nachosny "guac rock" party boat (guacs + bands) & rode the high seas of the east river with a few hundred other folks, listening to rock & eating guac & eating tac...os & sucking...er...well, actually, i was with a friend & my sister & her friend, so i only did the first three things. most importantly, i was eating tac...os, as this year nachosny upped the ante by inviting brooklyn taco co. onto the boat & letting them set up a stand on the upper deck.

brooklyn taco's been around for about a year now, with a permanent booth at the essex st market & a weekend one at the hester st fair. it's the brainchild of jesse kramer & erica molina, who are, respectively, the culinary & business/creative arms of the company.

at the market, they've got an eight-taco menu with stuff like a cola-braised pork taco & a chorizo y potato taco. i'll eventually have to visit the market & eat ONE OF EVERY TACO but on the boat that particular night they only had the chipotle'd chicken & the guaco taco, so i went with one of each. at $3.75/per, they're not cheap but they're mostly worth it.

chipotle'd chicken - here's the thing about brooklyn taco's tacos. they've got a TON of shit going on in them. for the guac rock evening, they were rocking the purple corn tortillas, which mostly managed to contain the chicken, salsa fresca, cojita cheese, crema & red hot sauce. as is their thing, every ingredient in the taco was fresh & brought something to the overall flavor, from the juiciness of the pulled chicken to the salsa to the multiple dairy products. definitely one of the better chicken tacos i've had in the city.

guaco taco - though i'm more about tacos with a little protein in them, the guaco taco had the potential to be my favorite of the two. i LOVE guac. also, i LOVE guac. it's a pretty straightforward taco, with nothing more than guac, cojita cheese, red onion, crema & a green hot sauce. this one got a one tortilla setup, as two aren't really necessary to contain the guac & whatnot. while the guac was well done & blended nicely with the other ingredients, without a meat, it felt a bit empty. not bad though. not bad at all.

after only trying two of their tacos, i'm completely fine with saying that brooklyn taco puts out inventive, flavorful fare made from fresh ingredients. from what i can tell, they're TOTALLY made with love, so i'll be heading to the essex st market to try some of their other tacos ASAP. too bad i won't be able to eat them on a boat.
